Capturing life in words…

Daddy

image
My awkward walk
struggled to reach you,
pulling my bat and ball
and miniature glove.
Will you play today,
Daddy?
Will you be with me
today?
Your blue eyes
looked through me
not seeing my hope
fall broken
to pieces between us.

My steady walk
struggled to reach you,
holding a grandchild in
my arms. I smiled.
Will you play with us today,
Dad?
Will you be with me
today?
Your blue eyes
looked through us
not seeing my hope
fall broken
to pieces between us.

My weary walk
struggled to reach you,
as I read Mom’s eulogy.
Too tired to play today,
Dad,
Will you just sit with me
today?
Your blue eyes-
wet and vacant,
not seeing still.
I picked up pieces of me
and left broken hopes between us.

This IS moving…and I am so thankful my father, for the most part, was the opposite of this. Sorry you had to live this.

I am thankful for your thoughtful, kind comment. I do believe we all have our hardships. And if this poem allows one to see the beauty and love in their own relationship with their father, I feel I have penned a decent piece.
I strive for authenticity. Your comment is a gift of affirmation.
